Celebrating Women's History Month

Updated: Mar 3

Women's History Month is a celebration of the remarkable contributions and achievements of women throughout history. This special month has its roots in the 1970s, when the Education Task Force of Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women created "Women's History Week" in 1978.

Two years later, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8th a national celebration, and in 1987, Congress passed a resolution to extend Women's History Week to become a month-long celebration in March.

When it comes to women's fitness, the journey has been long and winding. In the early 20th century, women were encouraged to exercise at home as sweating in public was considered unladylike. However, by the 1940s, women were exercising more in public facilities, albeit in dresses and skirts. The 1950s saw the rise of yoga, and the 1970s brought running into the mainstream for women. Aerobic exercise became increasingly popular, led by female pioneers like Jacki Sorensen and Judi Missett, who founded Jazzercise in 1969. We celetreate these pioneers in the fitness world.

The 1980s saw a significant surge in women's fitness, thanks in part to the rise of video exercise tapes. Jane Fonda's iconic workout videos helped to popularize aerobics and strength training for women. This was a time when women were finally starting to take control of their health and wellness, and the fitness industry began to cater more to their needs.

Today, women dominate the fitness and wellness industry, with countless gyms, studios, and online platforms catering to their diverse needs and interests. As we celebrate Women's History Month, let's honor the trailblazers who paved the way for women's fitness. From Lotte Berk, who created the barre method, to Serena Williams, who continues to inspire women with her strength and resilience, we are grateful for the women who have made fitness more accessible and empowering for all. So, let's keep moving, sweating, and celebrating our strength and solidarity!
